Golden Milk standing on red table

You’ve likely heard about the health benefits of turmeric. So why not add this powerful spice to your daily routine in a delicious and soothing way? For those with autoimmune diseases, turmeric offers support in reducing inflammation and boosting immunity. Something we can all use on our health journey!

I absolutely love golden milk. Not for every occasion, but it does have a place in my routine! I prefer to have it in the evenings. When I am tired, need a little pick me up or something to help me sleep better.

This warming, anti-inflammatory turmeric milk is golden in my eyes….haha. In more ways than one! When I want something a little sweeter at night, I opt for beetroot latte, as it feels like having a dessert (although not very sweet at all). In the mornings as my coffee substitute, I make this chai latte recipe.

What is golden milk?

Golden milk is also known as golden latte, turmeric milk, or turmeric latte, or haldi doodh. It is a traditional Indian drink that has become very popular worldwide for its amazing health benefits.

The star ingredient is of course turmeric!

I’ve seen ready-made golden milk powders for sale, but they often contain black pepper. If you are following the strict Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), then those mixes won’t work.

So, we revert back to homemade turmeric latte. Because homemade is best! It allows you to control the balance of flavors to your liking.

Is golden latte good for you?

Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been widely studied for its health benefits.

Some health benefits of turmeric include:

  • Powerful anti-inflammatory properties: While the dose in golden lattes might not be high enough, this delicious drink is a way of helping fight inflammation, even if only at a small scale.
  • Antioxidant: Curcumin is also known to help block the action of free radicals, which play a major role in aging and diseases.
  • Healthy brain and memory: We can all do with a bit of a boost in brain health and improved memory! Curcumin can help you with this!
  • Supports digestion: Ginger and turmeric both promote digestive health.
  • Boosts immunity: Turmeric is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can help strengthen the immune system.
  • Promotes relaxation: The warm milk and spices are soothing, making it perfect before bedtime.

Plus there are a range of other benefits too! It is said to be anti-fungal and have anti-cancer properties too. There is a ton of information available online, such as here and here.

Turmeric is a healthy and healing spice that we should not ignore!

Turmeric Latte ingredients standing on a counter

Ingredients for your homemade turmeric latte:

Turmeric is a golden orange spice derived from the root of a plant from South Asia. It adds color, flavor, nutrition and many health benefits to any meal.

Ginger is also derived from a root (from southeast Asia) and adds some complex flavors to any dish. A little bit spicy, sweet and fruity all in one.

Cinnamon comes from the dried bark of trees grown in southeast Asia. A little goes a long way to add a nice spicy punch to drinks and meals.

Your milk of choice. I recommend using homemade coconut milk.

Sweeten to taste with natural sweeteners such as honey, maple syrup, coconut or maple sugar.

Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that is incredible at reducing inflammation. It is best absorbed when combined with a little bit of fat and some black pepper.

But alas, on the AIP elimination diet, black pepper is not allowed, so if you are on the strict AIP diet, skip the pepper. But if you are not on AIP, or know black pepper is OK for you, then it would be beneficial to add a small sprinkle to your golden latte.

And as fat content, if your milk has a high fat content that should be fine. Or, add a spoon of coconut oil to your drink.

How to make the best turmeric latte?

It is super easy to make at home, and you probably already have the key ingredients at hand! All you need to do is add the powders to a cup, add your preferred amount of hot water and milk ratio, sit back and enjoy.

One thing to note though is that the spices do not dissolve in the liquid. With time they will settle to the bottom. So you want to keep stirring as you drink to make sure you actually drink all the spices and don’t end up with a lot of sediment.

You can make a larger batch turmeric latte and keep it in a closed container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

You can also make a batch of turmeric latte powder mix. By multiplying the ingredients and adding them all into a little container, you will have your turmeric latte powder ready for whenever you need it.

So many variations for this AIP coffee alternative

There are endless ways to customize your golden latte recipe to fit your taste buds and your dietary needs.

Experiment with different milk options. Using nut, oat or coconut milk, normal cow’s milk, try them all and see what you like the best. We prefer to use our homemade coconut milk, but I haven’t tried it with all other milks yet.

You can use fresh ingredients to make your golden milk. It requires a little bit more preparation and is a bit messier (especially the turmeric). It delivers a whole different experience and flavor profile.

You can also play around with the spices and the concentrations. If you don’t like ginger, or don’t have any on hand, feel free to skip it. Make it stronger or weaker.

I have seen people add some cardamom, vanilla, a pinch of salt and even some cocoa powder. So many options!

And lastly, you can drink it hot or over ice!

Play around with the ingredients and find what best works for you! And If you try something different, please comment below so we can all benefit from your experience!

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you drink turmeric latte?

  • My naturopath told me to aim for ¼ to 1 tsp turmeric a day. I don’t manage to get that much in, without opting for curcumin in a supplement form. Especially because my turmeric mixture is quite mild. Hence I add it to other meals, where possible.

What does a golden latte taste like?

  • Earthy and musky, sometimes a hint of bitterness and the milk adds a level of creaminess. The ginger adds a bit of zing. Remember to keep stirring. Turmeric will settle to the bottom otherwise and you will not want to end your cup with a mouth full of sediment.

Where to buy the ingredients?

  • Turmeric and black pepper are available in any grocery store in the spice section. Ginger powder might also be available there, or perhaps in the health food aisle. If not, health food stores or online places such as Amazon or similar will definitely have it.
  • Of course organic is always best, as it reduces your exposure to chemicals. But don’t let this be a hurdle for you.

Will it stain teeth?

  • I believe you would have to consume huge amounts of turmeric before it would stain your teeth. So I would not worry about that. It will however stain your carpet if you mess, so be careful.

Does it need to steep?

  • That is a good question. I actually don’t know. This article states that hot temperature actually helps the body absorb curcumin better. How true this is, I don’t know.
